In the meantime I had seen a lot of the other Bond movies on video and had become a fan of the character. I enjoyed it although I didn't think it was as good as Goldeneye.
These days my opinion about it hasn't changed very much.
It's let down a little by its villains. Carver's plans are quite clever and original if a little far fetched but overall he's a wimp and Stamper doesn't get to do much
after we first see him use his machine gun. Vincent Schiavelli is the most memorable bad guy and he only gets one scene.
As far as Bond's ally in the film Wai Lin I found her kind of annoying. Even though she benefitted from Bond's presence numerous times it seemed like she was always trying to ditch him. When Carver captured her I kinda hoped Bond would repeat the line he used about Natalya on the train in Goldeneye.
It would have served her right.
I have TND in the middle of the bunch. I don't think it really stands out as really good or bad.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8130912260408301801.post-90627566219975373582012-09-26T23:42:46.663-04:002012-09-26T23:42:46.663-04:00Well, until the last couple of paragraphs - this w...Well, until the last couple of paragraphs - this was also building up as a 007 overview I was less fond of than most of the others. I'm glad you like the movie more now - as it is my favorite of the Brosnan era. It's classic Bond - action packed, big over-the-top villain, superstrong henchman, and how can you say the Bond theme is overused? This is also Arnold's best score for the series - a blatant homage to John Barry that works very well for this Bond Superfan. I'm also glad the title changed - try looking at this as Tomorrow Never Lies in a list of all the Bond movie titles - it stands out - and not in a good way - like a sore thumb. Tomorrow Never Dies is Flemingesque doubletalk like You Only Live Twice. It works. That two films later they did go with a too-similar title is not this movie's fault - Wilson and Broccoli and company should have worked harder for a title in 2001.
I saw this one at the first show on Friday December 19th, 1997 - I had started the morning coordinating the cast of Dawson's Creek through hair makeup and wardrobe - but was then allowed to steal away at about 11:45am - I think the show started at 12:10pm. I dodged all those people seeing Titanic - and after the last credit had rolled up the screen I dashed out and back over to Screen Gems Studios to work the rest of the day and into the night. This was the first Bond movie I purchased on DVD - in a packed special edition - before I even owned a DVD player! While I JUST added the Bond 50 Blu-Ray set to my video vault that original DVD is still in my collection - and to see why - here is a post from my blog - check out the last picture in the post...

http://craiglgooh.blogspot.com/2011/11/saturday-night-at-movies-111211.html

See you in November!Craig Edwardshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06037542638067599437noreply@blogger.com
